There are many benefits to having a mixture of styles; it is truer to life and more compatible with it, usually we end up with loved-pieces of various styles over our lives and they get to coexist in our homes. Such a mixed style is visually more interesting and more stimulating to the senses than a mono-style set up. It also allows you to more easily introduce new furniture or replace pieces without having to worry about them perfectly matching what's already there. When you make those mixed styles also consist of items that age well and gain patina and character from daily use, you get additional benefits like ease of use, livability, and a timeless look.
The Hotel Emma in San Antonio is a great example of these ideas being put to use. They achieved a beautiful timeless look that is sophisticated yet casual, elegant but cozy and comfortable all at once.

Casual dining
It's easy to be distracted by stuff (like dining furniture, silverware, glassware, etc) in pursuit of an enjoyable dining experience but what really matters most (and a lot harder to have) is good company. An unpretentious setting is not just OK but preferable so everyone can be themselves. Whether it's some flowers in a vase, a potted plant nearby, or a lush garden, let nature provide all the aesthetic touches.

Casual living rooms
Couple of casual and easy-going living rooms. The coffee table in the bottom picture is quite nice, it's simple, practical and has rounded edges which anyone with small kids can appreciate, and it actually happens to be safer for people of all ages. The rug in that picture is pretty cool, too.

Comfortable style
Cozy, bright, comfortable, and easy-going living room. The plaid pillows and the chairs they are on, the exposed brick wall, some color all come together to create a great hang-out area.

Matchy-matchy is neither interesting nor smart
Nice casual living room with comfortable couches and a chair that go well together but are not matchy-matchy. The variation adds visual interest, adds character and it makes good sense since you can easily replace or upholster one without worrying about the whole set. Making life easier is the way to go!
The rug, the well-used chest for a coffee table, the big windows, and the exposed beams are also great in this room!

Bubbly location
I like the song Bubbly from Colbie Caillat, and the video offers a lot of inspiration as well; easy going interiors with linoleum floors, wooden window/door frames, and beautiful casual textiles... A great example in comfort over luxury!

All images are stills from Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" music video. I got my screenshots here.

Go easy!
There is quite a bit of inspiration in this place; the cool stone floors, lively colors, the simple and sparse furnishings, generous use of white (makes for a brighter home,) a dining table with mismatched chairs, and the overall easy-going feel!

Old clothes and Fabric Scraps
If your clothes are too worn out even for wearing around the house you have some options:
-You can donate them (Even if they're too worn out for resale Goodwill sells such items together as bulk to companies that recycle them as insulation)
-You can make rags out of them
-Or you can always add some comfort and style to your life by turning them into a casual crazy quilt:

Turns out scraps work quite well as upholstery also. The design group Squint creates great lively and easy-going pieces of furniture by using colorful patchwork for upholstery.

Colorful Kitchen
I am not too wild about matchy-matchy things anyway - I think it's the least creative way to design an interior - so I love how there are different cabinets in different colors in this kitchen. In my book the adage "variety is the spice of life" applies to decorating as well.

A Relaxed Set Up
A great sturdy table, and the ease of mismatched chairs add up to a very relaxed dining area.

Mismatched Silverware
This is quite a table; sturdy, practical, rustic, and great looking. I love tables like this one. Take a closer look at the setting and you'll see something else I can't get enough of...
...The table's set using mismatched silverware! Adds a lot of character and joy to the meal. And how easy going it is... Just get any silverware you like, unique ones, modern ones, traditional ones... from garage sales, big box stores, thrift stores, where ever you find them... and don't worry about having a matching set of 10 or 12 or whatever... Perfect! The underlying principle is: Enjoy life, don't make it harder!

Variety is the spice
No rug under the table, and mismatched chairs... very relaxing, and easy to maintain. One chair goes out of commission, just get another one you like, don't fuss about matching stuff to each other.
