As with most things, backyard pools also benefit from a generous dose of natural materials, shapes, and textures. Such a look is also easier to maintain and therefore more relaxing to be in and around.
If you're interested in poolside landscaping you would probably enjoy my previous posts here, here, and here as well.

Stone paths, stairs, & rustic outdoor dining
These images make a great case for natural materials and forms, don't they? They age better, they look better, they're easier to maintain, and take less processing to prepare. What else could we ask for? Btw, the paint job in that patio is really nice, too.

Natural stone paths and flagstone patios
These are some amazing looking examples of stonework, and the casual spirit in which they were used in goes so well with the non-uniform and unpolished nature of the stones. Like in that pool image, don't you just love the foliage growing through those stones?

Beautiful outdoor shower & stone patio
Whether its a Mediterranean patio or a tropical outdoor shower area, natural textures and colors, (like the stone walls, flooring and flagstones in the images below) and of course plants, make everything more beautiful, and give their surroundings a rich character.

Outdoor stone floors
Rustic and rough stonework always look good, especially when there's a great view by it!

Cool river rock/pebble walkway
A path made of colorful river rocks like this would be a great (and relatively easy) DIY project to add color and lots of character to your yard.

Decorate with flowers!
Whatever kind of place you have nothing improves your environment as much and as well as some foliage and some colorful flowers. Makes any place more cozy, and easy-going just like that. And it's good for us, too. Apparently any contact with nature, and especially flowering plants, reduce stress, encourage positive feelings, and even speed-up recovery after surgery!

Stone walls
Mediterranean architecture is the only one I know that can appear natural, unpretentious, rustic, but still civilized and graceful all at once.

Hide rug
Great stone wall, cool hangers, and that stitched hide rug all come together nicely to create an easy-to-live-with and rugged entryway.

Casual landscaping
This place has landscaping just the way I like it; wild and casual. It's not too shabby on the inside either - I love those armchairs.

Rustic sink & wall
That sink and those stone walls would last forever, and with their rough texture they would be easy to maintain. Fabric covers for cabinets are also kind of cool. Software solutions are usually friendlier and cozier and their production has a much smaller carbon footprint. I bet it's hard to child-proof them though!

Natural, wild, and free landscapes!
I love landscaping that's modeled after natural formations and appreciate the natural shape and form of plants rather than trimming them into tacky unnatural shapes. While looking wild, and rustic, and amazing, this approach also reduces the time and energy spent on maintenance. Double whammy! Sones Landscape Architecture creates great examples of what I'm talking about...
