Low litter succulents and cacti by pools

I love succulents and cacti. Besides using low water, low maintenance, and looking beautiful, they also create very little or no litter which make them excellent choices by pools and ponds. And, as the pictures below show, you can create very lush landscapes using various cactus plants and succulents.

Gravel for natural garden paths

Along with a mixture of plants and boulders, gravel is a "natural" choice for relaxing and easy-going landscapes. Gravel is:
  • easy to live with, you can move it around, adjust it's path/shape/size easily
  • will keep dust and mud under control
  • inexpensive compared to other options
  • it is permeable so it keeps the soil under and around it more healthy, and
  • looks great as part of a natural looking landscape.
Gravel generally does better in relatively dry climates, and it has been used extensively in Mediterranean landscapes and in the American South-West for good reason.

Lush xeriscapes

That "lush xericapes" title is not an oxymoron. It is possible, low-maintenance, and gorgeous!

Casual barrel pool & painted bathroom walls

Casual + natural + colorful = beautiful, practical, easy-going.
I am not sure how long painted bathroom walls would last with so much exposure to water, but the idea of easily applying a new coat definitely has its appeal, and the example here looks amazing with a touch of stoic, humble, & authentic.

Lush xeriscapes

We all know the benefits of xeriscaping, the major ones being saving water and time (xeriscaped yards are generally low maintenance).  Some people dismiss xeriscaping as an option because they claim the prefer greener, more lush landscaping. Well these images are good examples showing that xeriscaped landscapes can be very lush, colorful, and brimming with life.

Succulents & flagstone walkways

Flagstone walkways, stuff growing between pavers, and succulents come together to create beautiful and water-wise yards. Although honestly, I tried doing this with my flagstone and I found it a lot easier to live with and to maintain when the gaps between the stones were filled with concrete. Flagstone still has a lot of that casual and natural look without stuff growing in-between anyway.

Relax in natural beauty

Great easy-going place with xeriscaped plants, stone walls, gravel on the ground, and cheerful colors that were allowed to show some age. Not only do these features give a place cozy-casual feel, they also make the place easier to maintain and last longer which makes the place truly relaxing!

Natural xeriscape

A great looking mesquite tree and low water use plants by some cool stone work on the ground. The texture of the wall is pretty cool, too.

Colorful xeriscape

I'm a fan of xeriscaping and FarOutFlora.com has some great examples showing that besides saving water and being generally low maintenance, xeriscaped yards can also be gorgeous and colorful.

Beautiful stones & tiles

Easy going and rustic backyard set ups! Who doesn't like natural stone? And that blue tile outdoor coffee table is great!

Let's get over ourselves

Isn't this house great? The grass may not be perfectly manicured, and the furniture might not be by famous designers but it's actually more liveable and cozy for it. It's unfortunate when we can't efficiently and inexpensively create comfortable, cozy, easy-to-manage, and beautiful spaces because we're too interested in impressing others or ourselves.

Plants of choice

Succulents are great looking, quite drought tolerant, and don't need much maintenance. What else do you want?

Summery

Can't go wrong with some bright colors and natural textures.

Can't find where this image is from. If you happen to know please let me know. I would like to give proper credit.

The Nature House

Natural textures, forms, and colors inside and out, the whole place is put together using minimally processed materials. Very cool place indeed.

Simple

Nice simple (and low-maintenance) exterior with corrugated sheets and simple gravel landscaping. This is the Tin Tabernacle Tearoom and it looks like a pretty neat place to hang out.

Variety is the spice... remember?

When landscaping pick a variety of low-water-use, and if possible native, plants for a beautiful and easy to maintain yard. Other than adding more visual interest and color to your yard, the variety is also healthier for the soil and the ecology in and around your yard. It will make your yard less vulnerable to pests and it'll attract a wider range of critters like birds and butterflies.

Cool water

Any water feature tends to make a place a lot more easy-going (although it would sure add to the amount of maintenance required so don't ignore that side of the coin!)

For a succulent life!

I love landscapes where a large variety of (preferably low water-use, low maintenance) plants were used. It's also nice when the natural shape and size of the plants are cherished and taken into consideration, instead of creating a situation where they need to be frequently trimmed and pruned to be presentable.
