Cozy, rustic, industrial...The eclectic mixed style of Hotel Emma

There are many benefits to having a mixture of styles; it is truer to life and more compatible with it, usually we end up with loved-pieces of various styles over our lives and they get to coexist in our homes. Such a mixed style is visually more interesting and more stimulating to the senses than a mono-style set up. It also allows you to more easily introduce new furniture or replace pieces without having to worry about them perfectly matching what's already there. When you make those mixed styles also consist of items that age well and gain patina and character from daily use, you get additional benefits like ease of use, livability, and a timeless look.

The Hotel Emma in San Antonio is a great example of these ideas being put to use. They achieved a beautiful timeless look that is sophisticated yet casual, elegant but cozy and comfortable all at once.

Great antique wood floor

While the distressed leather furniture's cool, and the aged brick wall is, while a little on the extreme side, still pretty nice - the wood flooring is awesome!

Rustic vanity and living room

These spaces are both amazing! Great textures! Especially love that stone sink, the tarnished faucets, and the wood stand in that bathroom.

Rustic sink & armchair

Great distressed leather armchair, and a great view! That kilim cushion on the floor is quite nice as well. That giant floor lamp must be a conversation piece! That farm sink in the second image is pretty cool too.

Better with age

I love distressed leather and big armrests therefore I find the chair below to be quite pleasant. Now if only it were less bulky and easier to move around...

Equipale furniture

I love these equipale chairs. The rustic natural materials, naturally tanned leather, and that they are still made by hand as they were centuries ago give them a lot of character -and yes, they are very comfortable and look great!

Pretty rustic

Nice laid-back elements: that stone wall, cozy couch, kilim rug, cool distressed leather chair, that old basket used for lighting, cabinets...etc, too many to count.

Cozy by Ralph Lauren

This is Ralph Lauren's ranch in Colorado. He proves that he has good taste by creating a warm, cozy, and most importantly an easy-going place with colorful kilim rugs, distressed leather, and lots of unpolished rough stones and wood.

That's a cool cabinet below. Simply and honestly put together without any fluff or pretense. RL has the good sense to let it show its age and what it's been through.

Distressed for de-stressing

I love leather club chairs and when they have distressed leather, even better. They are comfortable, iconic, and the distressed leather ages really well.

Biodegradable seating

Vegetable tanned leather is great. There's depth and variation in its colors (unlike chemically dyed leather,) and it looks better with age. Isao Takezawa Design creates some warm and casual stools with the stuff.

Sitting on cozy seating

The sun-bleached patchwork and worn/distressed leather are good choices for relaxed homes. Relaxed homes are good choices for relaxing in!

Lofts

Big windows, a cozy couch, nice brick wall, and exposed power circuits make for an easy-going house.

Exposed air vent pipes, bare concrete ceilings, concrete floors, and distressed leather.. this kind of comfort is what makes a place home.

Leather, Steel, and Wood

Instead of sanding them down and covering them up with a coat of paint, appreciate the unique characteristics of things.
